New Student Message

Welcome New Students!

As you begin your journey with the Silberman School of Social Work, we invite you to familiarize yourself with the resources that will support you along the way. Your next steps include the following:

Complete Your Seven Steps: Please be sure that you have fully reviewed your acceptance email and completed all steps outlined there. These steps will provide you with access to your CUNYfirst page and your student email account. Please reach out to any Advisor, Student Services staff, or Student HelpDesk staff for support if you come across any issues setting up this technology.

Review Your Orientation Page: You can review information on the Orientation Page for information around registration, required trainings, financial aid, transfer credits, required documents, and Practicum Education as well as contact information for Academic Advisors and members of the Student Services team. Be sure to review the Orientation Checklist (under the Resources tab) and reference the accompanying pdf checklist to guide you through your Orientation steps. Please note, you will be expected to be familiar with all this critical information as you move through your MSW program at Silberman. For information regarding your individualized Financial Aid planning, please reach out to the Financial Aid Office.

Join a Future Orientation Zoom Event: Over the next few weeks, we look forward to having you join us for a series of Orientation Zoom events. These Zoom events are optional but strongly recommended because they will further outline all requirements prior to the start of classes, provide you access to Hunter supports, and give you an opportunity to meet your fellow students.

Attend In-Person Sessions at Silberman: Additionally, we invite you to visit the school during one of the scheduled in-person sessions. You’ll be able to tour the building, receive general orientation information in person, and meet the Student Services team. New students often find it helpful to plan out their commute and orient to the East Harlem neighborhood before the start of classes.

Our goal is to assist you in getting all the “business” taken care of so that when classes start you can dive in with all your attention where it needs to be. We look forward to supporting all of you along the way—especially during this beginning phase of the work. So, let’s get started!

Best,

The Student Services Team:

Pam DeCuir, LMSW, Interim Director of Student Services & Academic Advisor
Alicia Greene, LCSW, Assistant Director, Student Services
Bonnie Zweig, LMSW, Academic Advisor
Luis Varada, Interim Office Manager
Patricia Samano, College Assistant
